Cybersecurity A Growing Safety Issue For Oil, Gas Industrial Plants


In the last few years, cyberattacks on banks, retailers and government institutions have made front page headlines and it seems no industry is safe, including the oil and gas industry, and the threat is expected to continue to grow – with more automation and digital technologies being used, the oil and gas industry is becoming a hot spot for hackers. While this type of security threat is somewhat new for this industry, the people involved are starting to take notice and are trying to do something about it.

However; there are challenges here that other industries do not face – the technology available to ward off attacks is incredibly effective, but the software assumes the user is well versed in cybersecurity which in the oil and gas industry, this is not the case. Unlike institutions such as banks and government offices, this industry generally does not have dedicated personnel for cybersecurity, and the task is put on staff that is already over-worked.
